She's sick.

I met her in the Fall of 1999.  I hadn't set eyes on her until I showed up with my moving van in the Southie alleyway. The house where we would become roommates. A mutual friend put us in touch as I needed a place to stay and she needed a help on the rent.

We didn't actually live well together. Sure, we were cordial and hung out a bit, but she wasn't more than a room mate. I'm kind of that way with girls, to be honest. It takes me a long time to let someone "in."

The next year I got engaged and my then fiance lived just 8 blocks away, so I moved out. This is when her and I became close friends. We exercised together, commuted to work together, met for happy hours, had sleep overs.  She worked her way "in" and we've never looked back.

She is my son's Godmother. She is my husband's confidante in all things "WTF is up with my wife?" She is my girl. She holds my secrets and my heart.

And she is sick.

Yesterday, my girl found out her biopsy results. She has cancer. The Big C. It's in her breast and her lymph nodes. This is all she knows. She's scheduled to see the oncologist tomorrow and on Saturday, Team A will get together with her for her self proclaimed "pity-party." We're going to figure out where to go from here.

I'm trying very very hard to not make this about me. But I'm scared. And I'm pissed. I'm fucking irate. I've cried a lot of tears and I'm sure more will be shed.

But on Saturday and every day that I'm with her, I will be her strength, no matter what it takes. Hell, if it comes to it, and she's in throes of chemo and she loses her hair, I'll shave my head with her.  I'm in. I'm so in and will fight with her.

She's my girl.

And she's sick.

I'm really sorry to hear of your friend's sad news. She is blessed to have such a good friend in you; you will be able to help her possibly more than even her team of doctors.

I hope her prognosis turns out as good as one can hope from here!

Any friend who will shave her head to support her bestie in chemo is AMAZING! WOW! Sending prayers and strength your way!

Damn. A friend of mine was also diagnosed recently. Cancer needs to be flipped off all day, every day.

I guess the silver lining is what you said:
"I'll shave my head with her. I'm in. I'm so in and will fight with her."

I've never seen more care and compassion than when friends are diagnosed. If that was the norm, this world would be a better place.

I'm so sorry for you both! I'm new here but can I still give a bit of advice (because I'm there myself) instead of telling her to stay positive, give her a safe place not to be. The part where we make everyone around feel better is more exhausting than the illness itself. Take good care of each other!

I know what you are about to go through. It does suck and you do need to be her strength. But don't be afraid to cry and let her know how you feel. You won't be able to hide it from her, and she'll be pissed if you try. Just be there for her. And love her like you do.

Ugh. That's really horrible. Hopefully it's something the doctors can work with & it'll be a great story of giving cancer the finger & going on with life. Good luck...to both of you.

Girl, this sucks and there isn't much else to say, but she's got you. If she is anything like you, the two of you could kick the crap out of that cancer in a jiffy either that or scare the hell out of it!!! Wishing you both the best especially your girl!

I'm terribly sorry to hear about your friend. Cancer is a mo fo. My father in law has bone cancer and he's been trying to kick it's ass for over 7 years. Every day he is here is a victory. My 6 year old son will be devestated to lose Grandpa...so we all fight with him. I lost my dad to lung cancer at age 10, so I really, really, really want to punch cancer in the nuts.
Science is making great strides in this field and I am hopeful for your friend's recovery. She is going to need you for sure.

Great post. That sucks. As a ray of hope, a friend of mine had the same diagnosis when she was 35. She had to have a mastectomy and all of her lymph nodes removed on one side. The prognosis was not good. She's been in remission for three years!!! Hang in there. (BTW, Stumbled you from Liz's BlogFrog)

I said it before but I'll say it again: your friend is so, so lucky to have you. In fact, should I ever go through a massive, traumatic life-threatening event, I'm gonna call you.

You both have a hard road ahead of you, but it's true what they say: a positive outlook is just as crucial as medicine.

She's your girl, and you love her. Of course you're angry and irate. You're pissed and you should be. But that anger will make you all fight that much more.
