Roll out the wagon?

Have y'all heard about Diane Schuler? From NY, who was apparently an alcoholic, but no one knew about it? And she drove drunk and killed 8, including herself? Well - if not - and you are interested, google or bing it, horrifying story.

And it's made me reflect on some things. Apparently others are as well.

I recently came across this article that I really really enjoyed reading NYTimes: Drinking in the land of Mommy Blogdom

The author is Stephanie and she blogs at babyonbored.

The article has a lot of humor, hits on some points that are familiar to me (play dates or momma's night out - on the sauce!), and was thought provoking.

Comments were closed - but this last one sort of hit home. Real hard. Like w/ a sledge hammer.

"When it comes to booze, you don't have to "ride the elevator all the way to the bottom floor" to get off. Its a very personal decision..she is fortunate to still have her health and family in place. Rest assured, life is just as amusing without being placated by cocktails.. you can remember a whole lot more sans dry mouth, headache, and clinking garbage bags."

I'm not saying I've quit. But I'm reassessing. I come from bad genes in this department, and have been super-conscious of potential issues for as long as I can remember.

I clearly have 2 options. I can quit - like flat out quit - and go to AA and all that it entails. I'm no stranger to that process and what it's like to live with "A Friend of Bill."

Or I can try to enjoy a drink or two, here and there, like I used to. Socially. To enjoy with my husband or a girlfriend. And to hopefully show my children what responsible drinking is.

I'm choosing option 2, for now. We'll see how it goes.

(for the record, that was scary)

That was probably the best comment there. The rest were so cruel.

Hi dammit!
I read through the post. Then yours.
It is scary. Scary is the exact word that is perfect for what you've said.
Exhale.

The Diane Schuler case is a wake up call for us all and you really brought the message home with your very thoughtful commentary.

Good luck on finding the right balance.

The other comments were pretty cruel. But Stephanie is strong for even posting about her journey.

Scary and a balance. I'm up for the challenge - but it's scary.

Thankfully? I've got mucho support from home and family - and I can have fun in a paper bag, w/ or w/out booze.

Good luck...I think you know what's up. You recognize what could potentially be a problem and from what I know that is the hardest thing. Addicts are super good at justification and denial. I personally drink everyday...usually 1-2 beers or glasses of wine with the occasional throw down. Some people might think I have a problem. I'm not one of those people so there!

Good for you Momma Kiss. I've been getting worried about you drinking, but since I'm not there "in real life" I don't feel like I really know. Plus, you are the only one who truly knows if you are drinking too much, and you are the only one who can motivate yourself to cut back or stop completely. I think cutting back is a very good idea and I wish I could be there to support you in person. You are funny and beautiful and a smart, wonderful Mom and wife without the alcohol.

You are brave and I admire that.

Something hit a nerve in the article and you have decided to reassess. Good for you, that first step is a doozy.

I wish you much luck and patience and hope that you are able to achieve your desired goal. Good luck girl.

When my kid was younger, I didn't worry as much about drinking in front of him because he really didn't comprehend that concept of a beverage that can alter one's mental state. Now that he's older, I am more careful not to overdo it when my buddies are over, because (damn) he can now start putting pieces of the puzzle together and remembering them for the long term.

However, all is not lost. I feel that while being drunk around your kid is a definite no-no, showing him that alcohol, when consumed responsibly is a natural part of adult social lives. My kid knows I LOVE beer and I LOVE JD and I LOVE Scotch. But much in the same way he LOVES ice cream. It's not a crime to like something and consume it in moderation. Just like I wouldn't let him eat half a gallon of Haagen Daz, I would drink an entire bottle of Jack.

OK, major typo in my comment. Last line. Should read, "I would NOT drink an entire bottle of Jack."

Freudian much?

DEFINITE wake up call. Not drinking now because I am preggers but it definitely makes me re-think things for when I am not!
